ELRC 1993-90 – Electrical Basics for Valmont Irrigation

Course Description: Designed for service technicians that are new to the electrical field. The course will develop basic electrical skills and enable the technician to identify components and how they operate. The course uses hands-on experiments to enforce the study of basic electricity and the use of video and diagrams to explain the operation of the components. See HawkNET for call numbers.

Course Objectives: Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1. Safely measure voltage, ampacity, and resistance and know how they interrelate.
2. Identify the different components and their function of a basic irrigation control panel, and the controls in the tower boxes.
3. Properly terminate wires.
4. Understand series and parallel resistive and switching circuits.
5. Know the basics of single and three phase power.
6. Understand basic motor control circuits.
7. Know the Theory of Operation of Center Pivot

Content Information:

1. In order to receive a passing grade for ELRC -1993-90, students must complete the assigned lessons by their instructors to earn a course grade of “C” or better.
2. Upon completion of this course, students will have completed the following:
• The quizzes at the end of each chapter concerning basic electricity and component identification and operation.
• A cumulative final test.

Course Expectations: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

• Calculate and measure ohms, volts, or amps.
• Have the ability to identify major components use in the Valmont Irrigation system and know how they relate to the theory of operation.
• Understand the benefits of three phase power.
• Know the wiring color code and how to properly terminate these wires.

4. 45 hours is expected of the student to work in the course.
5. Must obtain required access codes, books, lab supplies, and supplemental materials.
6. The student must have computer literacy skills to:

   • Locate and submit files with an attachment
   • Create, edit, save, and retrieve files from a location
   • Participate in an online chat room environment
   • Navigate the internet to reach a web site or search the Internet
   • Create, open, and read e-mails and attach files in an e-mail
7. Students are strongly encouraged to take the online tutorial and/or non-credit online preparation course.
